Conclusion

My Bonnie Lola

Flyntster and Bairno run around and chase each other and when they catch each other they tussle and toss and wrestle and laugh and do all manner of things to each other that I ignore unless there is blood or a scream that may mean more than a simple ouch or stop it. These strange behaviors are sometimes accompanied with loud bumps and crashes followed immediately by, “We’re okay!” and “Nothing broke!” I remind them from the other end of the house often with “Good, now clean it up!” and “Please go outside to play like that!” and “BOOOOYS! Settle down!” and “You’re too loud!” One reads a book the other jumps on him. It begins all over again. When they play hard and sweat, they stink.

Hornworms

We have had a bit of buzz around our tomatoes lately. First we noticed some damage to a small section of our tomato plants.

damage

Then I found the culprit and went straight to Google. Aaaah, Google. We learned we had a tobacco hornworm. I found the little guy not too long after his first instar; While I didn’t get a snapshot of it he was near the old cuticle and very small. He was green, about 1″ long, and about as big around in diameter as an ink refill for a ball point pen.

We were intrigued by him and what he is to become, so we decided to “sacrifice” one of our smaller tomato plants we had been nursing (it wasn’t growing well where it was) and remove it from the garden to put it in a patio pot and allow the caterpillar to have it for its home. Overnight it grew a bit more than double. My children were so surprised it grew that fast until the 5 year old and the 13 year old said in unison, “Well, it is The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”

Big Backyard Bugs

BigBackyardBugs_tn

I found three rather large grasshoppers in our backyard the other day. I “rescued” this one from one of the kittens. Man, cats are mean to their food, aren’t they? One day back in Hattiesburg, I watched a neighbor’s cat play with her meal before she finally killed it and ate it.

I digress.

It's big!

I have never seen any grasshopper this big or this color. As a matter of fact I never even thought about the existence of a grasshopper this size or color. It is not something I sit and ponder too often, the size of grasshoppers or their color. What I do know is that it absolutely freaked me out at first. I had to catch one and look it up. They seem to be Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers. Its wings do it practically no good as they are too small for the body weight and size. It can not even hop very far, just a few inches, so they mostly crawl around on the ground.

Cutie-est boy ever.

Of course I couldn’t pass up a pic of one of my bug-lovers watching me take pictures and chase it along the ground. Anyone wanting to peruse the larger versions or the whole set of buggy-goodness for your bug lover, here is the whole set. I have a bunch more I have not yet uploaded. I am so loving this camera!

In Memorium – Part V, The End

This entry is part 5 of 5 in the series Loving Miss Daisy

A week came and went while we watched sweet Daisy get more and more comfortable with her blindness. There were a few days, one or two, she seemed a little confused with all the boxes packed for the move. I kept her typical pathway as free from clutter as possible, but as she became more comfortable with her loss of sight she began expanding her comfort zone a little more every few hours. She didn’t keep to our room anymore even venturing to jump on a few boxes for a nap. She actually found the box with a blanket on top of it and defended it once or twice from Little Buddy. I even began to wonder if she was just extremely near sighted. I checked and she had no reflex in her eyelids when I flicked my fingers in front of them and her pupil not longer responded to any light.

But Daisy was happy and so we tried to be also for her too. Amazingly enough she even tolerated the other female cat in the house she never liked before, Suzy. Daisy actually let Suzy clean her face for her a few times. Remarkable. The following weekend hubby and three children went off to the new town, I stayed home with the baby and one who had a sleepover planned with a friend, at the friend’s house. The plan: to get things cleaned and packed. Well, I got a lot done, but the dust sent my asthma into overdrive and my allergies went bizerk as well. I spent some time cleaning in my sewing area while the baby napped.

After I mopped the floor I noticed some small droplets of blood on my kitchen floor in a path from my bedroom door to the den door. I began to wonder if a cat had stepped on a pin in the carpet and pricked it’s pad. I began checking the cats, one by one. First Buddy – he was closest to me. Although asleep, he’s the one in the den the most. Nope, all feet are fine. Now for Suzy, she doesn’t like to be picked up so I had to coax her a little to let me look at her feet. It’s not Suzy. Skipper. Skipper? Where are you? It must be Skipper, he hides when he’s made or hurt or scared or . . .
nope, not Skipper. Oh no. Where’s Daisy? Daisy. Daisy? She comes running in her own sweet “where are you” way. Phew! Her feet are fine. Oh, well. I guess it’s no big deal.
