Recent Conversations

I’ve had a few conversations recently that have left me with a feeling of not wanting these days to pass. The days with my older children of understood correct use of sarcasm and its limitation and boundaries and the humor of it. The kind of sarcasm between siblings that is funny and understood and not taken as being mean or hurtful, but just funny. Enjoying conversations with little ones that I just want to absorb and never forget. The kind of absorption that leaves me wanting it that much more.

A couple of weeks ago I was doing the mom taxi thing when Mc got in the car and sat next to one of his sisters. Mc had been doing some running around and other outdoor things that made him hot and sweaty before I picked him up.

Moggiepillar (DD12): Oh man! Do you have to sit so close? You have some amazingly strong B.O.
Mc (DS9): I do? HA! Got you. (lifting arm to fan and share) Want some more? (lots of laughter)
Moggiepillar: GROSS! (more laughter) You STINK. You didn’t smell like this yesterday.
Me: ???
Mc: Yeah, I know. But you. YOU have underarm hair. Are you European?
Me: WHAT? (thinking: How did I miss this? And. Where did my nine year old boy make the connection of underarm hair and Europe?)

NOTE: Situation solved. Purchased and used: antipersperent/deodorant for one child, razor for other.

I’ve been having a lot of conversation with Flyntstone (DS3) lately about the alphabet and letters and various learning things he keeps asking about. I love watching the light bulb go off on his face; it’s just so brilliantly clear when he gets something. And then of course there is the typical three year old logic of all things.

The other day Flyntstonewas standing in his room under his light switch saying, “O-F-F. Off.” and turning off his room light. Then he would turn it on and do it again. I sneaked around the corner to watch him and he would point to the switch plate and the letters and say them exactly, but only when he could see them after the switch was moved to the proper position.

Flyntstone: Mama, how old are you?
Me: 38.
Flyntstone: Oh. OK.
Me: Flyntstone, how old are you?
Flyntstone: 3. This many (showing me three fingers).
Me: That’s right.
LottieLoo (DD6): (peeping her head around the corner of her bedroom, obviously having heard the conversation) Mama, you are 38?
Me: Yes.
LottieLoo: WOW! That’s a lot of numbers!

As I said, Flyntstone and I have been talking lots of sounds and letters. He has been fixating on what letter starts this and that. And sometimes what starts a letter (I’ll explain in a minute).

Flyntstone: A is for apple.
Me: Yes it is.
Flyntstone: D is for dinosaur.
Me: Yes it is.
Flyntstone: What starts S?
Me: S starts S. (makes the sssss sound.)
Flyntstone: No, ‘eh’ starts S.
AppleGirl (DD8): (from the other room) Mama, what is today?
Me: Tuesday.
Flyntstone: (showing me two fingers) Two is for Twosday.
Me: (hiding a chuckle.) No. T is for Tuesday.
Flyntstone: No. Tea is for Teaseday. Two is for Twosday. F is for Flyntstone and Friday. Mama, when is Teaseday?

Me: LottieLoo, are you making lots of friends at school?
LottieLoo: Yes. I know Bailey and Shelby and Nigel. Bailey and Nigel are nice and I play with them at the playground. Miss Regina helps me and Shelby [also has CP]. But Ella Rose just bothers me around all day.

Funny! This morning Peter and I went to the auto parts place for jeep parts. We arrived home to a house that smelled of fish. Simon had scaled the three very small fish he and Anna caught yesterday. IN THE KITCHEN. Scales everywhere. About fifteen minutes later, after cleaning up the scales and dousing the kitchen with half a can of Febreze, Becky walks into the kitchen carrying her hoodie jacket that had been in the dining room chair. Attached to the hood was a crispy minnow that Si had tried to save from being eaten by the larger fish. The look on her face made everything thst I had just screamed about hilarious. Now you know how we spent our day.
